The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s oldest student recognition program designed to recognize and engage high school students around a selected group of criteria, namely Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning: "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools." (from the NHS Constitution). Membership in National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility.

“I pledge to maintain high scholastic standing, to hold as fundamental and worthy an untarnished character; to endeavor intelligently and courageously to be a leader, and to give of myself freely in service to others. In so doing, I shall prove myself worthy of a place in the National Honor Society.”

This honor is both the public recognition of accomplishment and the private commitment to continued excellence on the part of the member. Students elected to membership are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities embraced by the society.

Pennies for Life

Goldthwaite High School National Honor Society Pennies for Life Campaign has returned for its third year and we will look forward to an even stronger year of donations for 2011-2012. It is designed to raise as much as possible for the American Cancer Society to be donated at Relay for Life. This year all three campuses are joining together to become proud sponsors of this worthwhile cause.

How can you help? We are simply asking you to donate your loose change to NHS…

Cancer continues to affect so many of our families at GISD and in our community. Some have wonderful stories of survival yet there are many types of cancer that still have no cure.  Statistically speaking, cancer has the ability to impact every family in our Nation with over 1,500,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed this year. Over 500,000 Americans will tragically not survive this year which averages to about 1,500 every day! Cancer currently accounts for 1 in four deaths however cancer has become the number one disease killer in young adults (statistics and facts from ACS & stupidcancer.org).  We can best help the American Cancer Society through our contributions to help fund more needed research.

Please help us by donating your Pennies for Life.

2010-2011 NHS Officers wear their favorite hats to support Relay

GISD students, faculty and staff will again be asked to support what NHS calls the “HATS ON TO FIGHT CANCER” fund raising campaign for the Relay for Life 2012. Students and faculty will put their hats on for $1.00 donation and GHS will try to hold a week of donations - more to come... Thank you to all who contributed last year! Hats off to each of you. GISD donated over $1650 total for 2011, which is double what was given in 2010!
